The 2018 Careers in Film Summit at SCADShow
Over the weekend (Saturday, November 3, 2018 (1 pm - 6 pm), the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held an event, “Careers in Film Summit,” at SCADShow, in Atlanta, GA. It was in partnership with re: imagine/ATL, Savannah College of Art and Design Atlanta (SCAD), DeKalb Entertainment Commission, African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), and Saunders Lockliear Entertainment (SLE). Tickets were free.
The event was for enthusiastic (aspiring) creatives to come and learn about the different carer routes/opportunities in the motion picture (film, television &, etc.) industry. It was set up in a series of panel discussions where industry professionals would talk about their personal experiences, from educational routes to how they could work up to their current positions. Their expertise spans songwriting, composing, sound, editing, visual effects, costume design, production design, and animation.
Some of the professionals that came were:
Matt Akey - Visual Effects Producer, Miss Bala
He is known for his work on Man of Steel, Passengers and The Amazing Spider-Man.
Cindy Carr - Set Decorator, Dynasty
Known for her work on Dynasty, Lore, and Sleepy Hollow, she was nominated for two Academy Awards in Best Art Direction.
Francine Jamison-Tanchuck - Costume Designer, Detroit
Known for her work on Detroit, Roman J. Israel, Esq. and Just Mercy (post-production)
Dosa Kim - Owner/Art Director, GOMA
She is known for her work on Crayons, Prodigal, and Steve Aoki Featuring Waka Flocka: Rage the Night Away.
Dionne Wynn - Make-up Artist, Night School
She is known for her work on Nobody’s Fool, Night School, and The Oath.
Overall, the event was informative and allowed everyone to network and gain the keys to success through a Q&A session. If you want to break into the industry, look for events like this one on Eventbrite.
